Introduction to MCV DJ

MCV DJ is a desktop application for playing music, mixing it with your voice and sending the mix to an Internet radio server. You can also use it to prepare and listen to audio on your computer without broadcasting.

Music is loaded from files on your computer. To broadcast, you also need access to a compatible server and the connection details provided by your station administrator.

What you can do

  • Load music into two independent players, called Deck A and Deck B.
  • Play, pause, stop and change a track's playback position.
  • Mix both decks and gradually transition from one to the other.
  • Prepare a queue to play several files continuously, with automatic transitions.
  • Save and import MCV DJ playlists.
  • Add a microphone, adjust its volume and mute it when needed.
  • Process your voice and automatically lower the music when you speak.
  • Trigger effects and liners using buttons or keyboard shortcuts.
  • Prelisten to files through a headphone output before sending them to the mix.
  • Broadcast the mix in MP3 and send song or program information.

Three concepts to understand the sound

Mix or program

This is the audio you create with music, the microphone, effects and liners. When you connect the broadcast, this mix is sent to the server. Master volume controls its overall level.

Local listening or monitoring

This means listening to the mix through your computer's main output. Enable it with Monitor through speakers / headphones. You can turn it off without stopping the songs or silencing what the server receives.

For example, if you are broadcasting and clear this checkbox, you will stop hearing the main output, but your audience will still receive the mix.

Prelisten

This is private listening to check a track or sound. Prelisten audio is not sent to the broadcast. Set it up under Audio > Headphones…; it has its own volume.

To hear the mix and prelisten separately, use separate audio outputs. If you route both to the same device, you may hear them together, although prelisten is still excluded from the audio sent to the server.

What you need

To start playing audio, you need the portable 64-bit Windows package, an available audio output and a compatible music file. A microphone is optional. An Internet connection and server details are only needed for broadcasting.

MCV DJ can play common formats such as MP3, WAV, FLAC, Vorbis, AAC-LC and ALAC. Compatibility also depends on how the file is encoded; files with the same extension do not always contain the same type of audio. Opus and HE-AAC are not supported by the current decoder.

Current limitations

The app does not include a radio server or create a station on its own. Broadcasting uses an Icecast 2-compatible input and sends MP3 audio. It does not record the program to a file, provide echo cancellation or microphone noise reduction, or update automatically.

You can learn the local features without connecting to a station. Broadcasting only starts when you choose Connect broadcast.
